TOOTH PASTE

Tooth paste is a medium to clean the teeth along with the Tooth brush. Apart from cleaning the teeth, it has some positive effects on teeth which helps the teeth to free from sensitivity and caries.

 Which Toothpaste to select?

There are several Toothpaste available for specific use like for decay prevention, sensitivity etc. One should get the guidance of a dentist to select a toothpaste which is apt for them.

Toothpaste for Decay prevention:

Toothpastes containing Fluoride works well for preventing tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral that works by making the teeth stronger and more resistant to decay caused by acid and bacteria. The quantity of fluoride in a toothpaste is also important. Children’s tends to swallow the toothpaste unknowingly so they may develop fluoride toxicity. Similarly, there should be enough fluoride to protect the teeth.

The fluoride level varies on different age groups:

Below 2 years   : Less than 500ppm

2  – 6    years   : 500 ppm

Above 6 years  : 1000 – 1500 ppm

 

Toothpaste for Sensitivity:

Sensitivity of teeth  are due to many reasons, the most common being  exposure of dentinal tubules. Toothpaste with potassium nitrate works by soothing the nerves inside the tooth.

The toothpaste for sensitivity can be applied all over the teeth, left  for two mins and  then brushing can be done. It should be used only for a shorter period of time.

Things to avoid:

  • Abrasives like Rock salt
  • Rough Tooth powder
  • Toothpaste containing abrasives

                          1.5 -3 years       :     Smear sized

                          3-6 years           :  Half-pea sized

                          6-12 years         :  Pea –sized
