Process Involved in getting a Crown and Bridge :
- Tooth Shaping: In order to accommodate the crown , your dentist will reshape tooth. There are special diamond and carbide shapers to get accuracy in shaping the tooth.
- Impressioning: A measurement of the prepared tooth and of the surrounding and opposing teeth is taken. Your measurements are then sent to a dental laboratory for processing of the crown. We use intraoral scanners to make digital measurements of the prepared tooth to get an excellent fit of the crowns and bridges. Rubber based materials can also be used to make impressions.
- Shade selection : The colour of your teeth is recorded as per standard shade guide. The individual characteristics, the change in the gradation of colors and transparency are recorded with photographs to communicate with the lab.
- Temporary Crown: Before fixing a permanent crown, a temporary crown will be fitted immediately after measurement to cover the shaped tooth. A suitable mouthwash is prescribed by the dentist, to get a nice healing of the gum architecture. Take care of your temporary crown by avoiding sticky and hard foods. Normally it takes 7 – 10 working days for the lab to make the crown, according to the type.
- Cementation: Your dentist replaces your temporary crown with a permanent one. The crown is adjusted, making sure that you are comfortable with it. Then only it will be cemented or bonded to the prepared tooth.

CROWN
A Crown, often called as a "Cap" covers the entire tooth, unlike a veneer which covers only the front surface of the tooth. A Crown requires more shaping of the tooth structure and is often used to strengthen a weak or broken tooth. Crowns are extremely durable, aesthetic and are commonly used in the front and the back of the mouth.
PURPOSE
While a crown is often used for its functional properties, like veneers these too can be used to bring about excellent aesthetic modifications in a smile. The common indications for a crown are:
- To restore badly decayed teeth, with large fillings or teeth which are root canal treated.
- To protect fractured teeth where little tooth structure is left.
- When the position, shape, size or color of the teeth have to be dramatically altered.
- To improve the bite.
- To strengthen worn down or mobile teeth.
- As a part of a bridge to support a tooth replacement.
- To be placed over an implant.
- To Protect a damaged tooth.
- To Replace lost tooth structure.
- To Improve tooth appearance, shape or alignment.

Crowns are made of acrylic, metal (gold or nickel - chromium), ceramic or a combination of any of these. The Ceramic crowns are great for aesthetics and durability. Full ceramic, now-a-days are computer designed (CAD – CAM) and also milled with the help of computer, so it has an excellent fitting, color and also strength. These are as hard as metal as it is made up of zirconium.

BRIDGE
Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into empty spaces resulting in bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and TMJ disorders.
Healthy teeth adjacent to missing teeth are crowned and an artificial tooth closes the gap. Depending on the position and number of missing teeth, the number of supporting teeth will vary. These are tooth supported bridges.
- Bridges are cemented to natural teeth taking support from them or to implants surrounding the empty space.
- Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include Metal, Metal Ceramic, Zirconia and Acrylic
- Post treatment care and maintenance are similar to that of crown.
